First Grade Work – Week of April 27-May 1, 2020

Monday

Reading:

  • Go over Words to Know on pages 160-161 with your parents. Today, you read the words, and let your parents read the sentences to you.

  • Turn to page 164. Read about Clyde Maria Puncel and Ed Martinez, the author and illustrator of this week’s story, The New Friend.

  • Listen as a grown up reads the story to you. For today, don’t worry about essential questions, just have fun reading the story!

Grammar:

  • Look at pages 194 and 195 in your reading book. Read about contractions.

  • Write the sentences on page 195. Use the correct contraction.

Spelling:

  • Write your spelling words in your planner or on a piece of paper. Read each word three times, and practice spelling it three times.

  • The spelling words are:

    • how

    • now

    • cow

    • owl

    • ouch

    • house

    • found

    • out

    • gown

    • town

  • Think about what the words have in common. Each word has the same sound made by two letters together. Those two letters are ou and ow.

Writing/Handwriting:

  • No writing today!

Math:

  • Gather some 3D solids such as boxes and cans.

  • Build structures like the friends on page 139.

  • Ask some questions about your items like:

    • Which ones roll?

    • Which ones slide?

    • Which ones look like boxes?

    • Which ones have circles on them?

Reading:

  • Tune into the reading video Miss Long posted on Facebook today to go over a read aloud story, answer some questions, and learn some new words.

Grammar:

  • Look at the picture on page 194. Tell a story about what is happening in the picture. Make sure each sentence has a contraction.

Spelling:

  • Go to www.spellingcity.com

  • Click the search icon and search school.

  • Type in Saint Patrick School WV.

  • Click on our school (it should be the only one).

  • Click on Susan Moody.

  • Scroll to find this week’s story, and play any of the free spelling games!

Writing/Handwriting:

  • Write three sentences about the picture on page 194 using contractions.

Math:

  • Complete math textbook pages 140-142.

Science:

Something Fun:

  • Play outside!

Wednesday

Reading:

  • Go over Words to Know on pages 160-161 with your parents. Today, you read the words and sentences.

  • Take turns reading each page of the story The New Friend with a grown up.

Grammar:

  • Take a break today!

Spelling:

  • Write your words in ABC order.

Writing/Handwriting:

  • Answer the following questions:

    • What do you find out about the setting and the characters on the first two pages of the story?

    • Why are Makoto’s parents glad Makoto made new friends?

    • Describe Makoto’s room.

Math:

  • Complete math textbook pages 143-144.

Science:

  • Take a break from science today!

Something Fun:

  • Find a directed drawing on Youtube to complete. Send Miss Long a picture!

Thursday

Reading:

  • Read Symbols of our Country on pages 186-193.

Grammar:

  • Complete wb page 142 and 148.

Spelling:

  • Write all your spelling words. Write the vowels in one color and the consonants in another color.

Writing/Handwriting:

  • Read Text to Text, Text to Self, and Text to World on page 193.

  • Choose one section. Answer the questions with at least three sentences.

Math:

  • Complete math wb pages 139-142.

Science:

  • Click this link to find out how hand sanitizer kills germs.
