Writing/ Handwriting 3rd/4th

  • Handwriting Practice- We will be begin writing in cursive more.
  • We will begin writing for the Young Writers Contest. Students do NOT have to turn their stories in for the contest, but we will do this as a writing grade for the next few weeks.

Reading 5th/6th

  • Fluency reading: poem/lyrics entitled “It Is Well With My Soul” by Horatio Spattford. Students will read this for a grade on Friday January 21, 2022.
  • Vocabulary: contact, particles, visible, moisture, erode, repetition, formation, AND structure. Test on Thursday January 20, 2022. (This is part of the weekly Reading test).
  • Genre: Expository Text (Information Text). Explains a topic with reasons and evidence. Supports reasons and evidence with facts, examples, and concrete details. May include, test features, such as diagrams or time lines.
  • Spelling: footprint, fairground, although, allowance, appoint, laughter, bleachers, faucet, encounter, bountiful, doubting, flawless, lawyer, southern, August, caution, boundary, coastal, nowadays, AND distraught. BONUS: entertainment AND causeway. TEST will be Friday January 21, 2022.
  • Grammar: Main and Helping Verbs
  • Comprehension Skill: Main Idea and Key Details
  • Stories: Patterns of Change pg. 194-197 in Reading/Writing Workshop Textbook AND The Story of Snow pg. 216-229 in Literature Anthology Textbook. Test Thursday January 20, 2022.

  • Vocabulary Strategy– Suffixes. The suffix -y means “full of”.
  • Genre: Genre: Expository Text (Information Text). Explains a topic with reasons and evidence. Supports reasons and evidence with facts, examples, and concrete details. May include, test features, such as diagrams or time lines.
  • Comprehension Skill: Main Idea and Key Details.
  • Stories: Earth and It’s Neighbors pg. 214-219 Reading/Writing Workshop Textbook and Earth pg. 240-254 in Literature Anthology Textbook. TEST on Thursday January 20, 2022.
  • Spelling: careful, wear, rear, stared, bear, gear, shared, where, here, pair, there, career, stairs, dear, AND peer. BONUS: weird AND fairly. TEST Friday January 21, 2022.
  • Grammar: Past Tense Verbs

  • Stories: Remembering Judy’s Appalachia pg. 194-197 in Reading/Writing Workshop Textbook and Delivering Justice pg. 216-234 AND Keeping Freedom in the Family: Coming of Age in the Civil Rights Movement pg. 236-239 in Literature Anthology Textbook. Test Thursday January 20, 2022.
  • Spelling: officers, difference, scene, decision, circus, cement, audience, introduction, certain, ounce, passage, general, exchange, badge, manager, orange, gingerly, arranged, languages, AND villagers. BONUS: general AND ceremony. TEST will be Friday January 21, 2022.
  • Grammar: Main and Helping Verbs

UPCOMING IMPORTANT INFORMATION

  • 4th-6th grade- We should be getting information this week about potentially participating in the County Spelling Bee!
  • THERE WILL BE A VIRTUAL DAY on Monday January 17, 2022 as there will be a Professional Development Day for staff.
